My homemade present

Every year my lovely Mum always makes us a homemade Christmas present. She has been knitting me squares for years, to sew into a gigantic blanket for my bed. I used to love searching under the tree for the big squishy parcel which I knew would contain a new bundle of squares. My Mum and Dad love to travel so my Mum has collected wool from all over the world to knit my squares. My favourite is a gorgeous blue and white variegated yarn from Iceland.

You can never have too many blankets, especially now that it is getting chillier, so I’m going to start sewing them all together. So now I simply need to decide which order to sew them into. Would you arrange them in a pattern or group certain colours together? How would you sew them together?

I’d do them all random and colourful πŸ™‚

I’m with Emma – random pattern = more colour, plus it’s like a memory quilt as you sew it all together then, remembering which yarn came from where, what year you got that square. Maybe use your absolute favourite square as the central square, if that makes sense, and build out from there? Can’t wait to see pics of your WIP xxx

I’d do the seams on the outside, as a design feature….

  4. Wow that’s such a good idea! X

What about sewing them together in stripes, like a rainbow? That’s what I would surely do. But with such gorgeous selection, it doesn’t really matter, it’s gonna be beautiful anyway πŸ™‚

I really like a log cabin knitted blankets, you could arrange colours to get that sort of effect.

Oh it’s got to be random – I would close my eyes then pick one square each time – I bet it would turn out fab! And such a lovely thing to treasure as well.

How many squares do you get each year? Has your mum done it even since you were born? It’s the cutest thing I’ve ever heard!

I think I’d spread them out randomly on the floor, maybe shift a couple here and there to get the balance right (gut feeling!), then crochet them together with long parallel seams as a feature on one side of the blanket.

That’s a lovely christmas tradition! Very special πŸ™‚ and the blanket will be wonderful in this cold πŸ™‚

I would stitch them in chronological order which will also map out where your mom has been over the years
