Book Review : Handmade Weddings

I am on a quest to make my wedding as handmade as possible, so when this book landed in my lap I was in heaven! Handmade Weddings : More Than 50 Crafts to Personalise Your Big Day by Eunice Moyle, Sabrina Moyle and Shana Faust is a beautiful compilation of projects to make for your wedding. Whether you have a clear idea of the things you want to make or have no idea where to start, this book offers lots of practical advice and inspiration on how to achieve your dream look. Just a few of the crafts that the projects cover include sewing, printing, papercraft, calligraphy, floristry, silkscreening and even how to carve rubber stamps.

The introduction is brilliant, the ladies who wrote this book clearly have a lot of experience and offer so many great tips to the reader. They have written checklists, explain the correct way to address your invitations, suggest when to start making and how to store the finished items and there is even a wedding timeline to help you plan ahead.

The book is organised into six chapters which each cover a style. These are Retro Homespun, Girly Romantic, Happy Graphic, Organic Minimal, Modern Classic and Found. At the start of each chapter there is inspiration by way of colour palettes, suggested fonts, textures, ideas for venues and lots of keywords. There are projects to make invitations, decorations, table centrepieces, favours and table decorations and more in each section. Each craft is accompanied by ideas for variations so that with a simple change of colour or materials you can make it to suit the style of your wedding.

Each craft has a difficulty level, tells you how long it will take to make and gives you an idea of cost. The instructions are very easy to follow and the diagrams are really clear. All of the fonts used in the stationery project are named too. I love these balsa wood designs!

Handmade Weddings has projects to make bouquets and corsages, cake toppers, clutch bags for the bridal party, decorations of all sorts, table centrepieces, all of the stationery you will need and even shows you how to make your table plan pretty! My favourite projects in this book have to be for the wedding favours, there are some very sweet ideas which are wrapped and presented beautifully. My particular favourites are the furoshiki fabric wrapped boxes and the tea filled test tubes.

The styling and photography in this book are stunning and it would be the most beautiful gift for a bride to be. It would remain a treasured book to refer back to after their big day, for inspiration on gift wrapping, handmade stationery and for decorating a special party or your home.

Ooo, this is going on my wishlist! I can also recommend, if you haven’t come across it, DIY Bride 🙂 It’s a little cheesy cover-wise, but the projects and ideas inside are gorgeous.

I too am getting married next year. I’m looking for handmade ideas but in a contemporary way as opposed to a vintage theme. How well does this cover contemporary?

    • Congratulations! I think it covers contemporary really well and there are lots of variations at the end of each project so that you can adapt it to suit the style of your wedding.
