A lovely introduction greets you when you open this book and you become immersed in Scandinavian culture, folk art and craftsmanship. Scandinavian Needlecraft, written by Clare Youngs, is filled with simple projects that will sit beautifully in any home. If you love clean crisp lines, beautiful stitched details and fresh colours, this book is for you!
This book is divided up into five chapters, bags, gifts and decorations, kitchen, clothes and accessories and soft furnishings. I really love how the projects throughout this book use basic materials, letting the embroidery and stitching take centre stage. There is a fantastic technical section in the back of the book, which shows you how to tackle twenty one different stitches. So if you are new to embroidery or simply need a reminder of a particular stitch, you will find all you need here.
The main theme that runs throughout this book is nature. The recommended fabrics are mainly cotton and linen and the motifs featured include leaves, flowers and animals. The designs are all printed in the back of the book and you could easily use them to decorate your own projects. They would also look stunning on tote bags or cushions.
I particularly love the cotton waffle bath mat, felt baby boots and felt mittens. There are some particularly lovely designs for children, including an embroidered dress, the mittens below and some sweet little brooches too. If you are looking for the perfect gift tag for a special present, you will find a great selection here. My favourite project in the book is the Christmas stocking, for which there are three embroidery designs. You can pick from a star, a heart or a flying reindeer!
